The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Lithuania are celebrating 30 years of formal diplomatic relations, which were officially established on August 20, 1996. To mark this milestone, a series of media and public relations events have been organized from August 15 to August 25, 2026.
To further deepen bilateral ties and friendship, the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Lithuania in Colombo announced that several practical projects are scheduled to be implemented in Sri Lanka in the near future.
Messages from Key Officials
In a joint message marking the occasion, H.E. Diana Mickevičienė, Ambassador of Lithuania to Sri Lanka, and Mr. R. M. Manivannan, Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Lithuania, shared their warm greetings:
- Ambassador Diana Mickevičienė:

"Over the past three decades, our nations have built a strong, friendly relationship based on mutual respect, trust, and productive collaboration. As we celebrate this significant milestone, we look forward to the future with confidence and optimism, further strengthening our partnership," she stated.
Highlighting the unique similarities between the two nations, she pointed out their comparable geographic sizes, the color similarities in their national flags, and deep-rooted spiritual ties. Notably, she referenced a replica of the sacred image of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn from Vilnius, Lithuania, which is enshrined at the Ampitiya Church in Kandy as a testament to their shared spiritual and cultural bond.

"On this occasion marking 30 years of diplomatic relations, we are honored to recall the growing friendship and continuous cooperation between our countries. Since 1996, we have built a meaningful partnership anchored in democratic values, peace, sustainable development, and shared aspirations," he noted.
Key Sectors for Future Collaboration
Lithuania is globally recognized for its advancements in digital technology, FinTech, cybersecurity, life sciences, and laser technology, while Sri Lanka offers a strategic maritime location, rich culture, biodiversity, and skilled human resources.
The partnership will focus on expanding cooperation across several key areas:
- Digital Technology & FinTech: Leveraging Lithuania’s expertise in IT, financial technology, cyber security, and laser applications to support Sri Lanka’s digital initiatives.
- Trade & Investment: Boosting bilateral trade opportunities and encouraging business partnerships.
- Tourism & Education: Promoting sustainable tourism and facilitating academic and student exchange programs between universities.
- Sustainability & Life Sciences: Collaborating on sustainable development goals and biotechnology initiatives.
The Honorary Consulate emphasized that the 30th anniversary is not only a celebration of past achievements but also a milestone launching a new chapter of dynamic cooperation between Sri Lanka and Lithuania.
