Colombo will once again glow with the spirit of Ramadan as “Salam Ramadan,” the flagship cultural festival of the Western Provincial Council, returns to Green Path from February 27 to March 1. Organised in collaboration with the Colombo Municipal Council, the 2026 edition promises a larger, more vibrant celebration following its successful debut last year.
Announced by the Colombo Mayor’s Office, the citywide festival aims to celebrate the Holy Month of Ramadan while promoting interfaith harmony, cultural understanding and economic vibrancy across Colombo and the Western Province. The 2025 inaugural event drew more than 15,000 visitors, encouraging organisers to expand the scale and programming this year.
Ramadan holds deep spiritual significance for Sri Lanka’s Muslim community, which comprises around 10 percent of the population. The sacred month is observed through fasting from dawn to dusk, increased prayer, charity and reflection. Families gather at sunset for Iftar, the breaking of the fast, while mosques see heightened attendance for nightly Taraweeh prayers. Beyond its religious importance, Ramadan is also a time of generosity, unity and strengthened community bonds.
“Salam Ramadan” seeks to bring those values into the public sphere. Over 100 stalls will line Green Path in a festive boulevard setting adorned with Middle Eastern-inspired lighting. Visitors can explore a rich array of traditional foods, retail products and artisanal goods representing Sri Lanka’s diverse Muslim communities including Moors, Malays, Memons and Bohras.
From fragrant biriyani and watalappan to Malay delicacies and Memon sweets, the culinary offerings reflect centuries of cultural exchange across the Indian Ocean. Retail stalls will showcase modest fashion, handcrafted jewellery, perfumes, Islamic books and home décor. Educational booths will highlight Muslim heritage, Arabic calligraphy and henna art, offering visitors insight into long-standing traditions.
Cultural performances including devotional songs, dance and stage dramas will add to the festive atmosphere, creating a welcoming space for people of all faiths to experience the spirit of Ramadan. The nearby Viharamahadevi Park will host communal Iftar gatherings, reinforcing the festival’s inclusive message.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting unity through cultural diversity, positioning Colombo as a multicultural city that celebrates all communities. Organisers are now inviting vendors, corporates, SMEs, hospitality brands and service providers to participate in what has become Sri Lanka’s foremost Muslim cultural festival and Ramadan marketplace.
With expanded programming and growing public interest, “Salam Ramadan” 2026 is expected to transform Colombo’s Green Path into a radiant symbol of faith, unity and shared celebration
