Chamithri Rambukwella Arrested and Released on Bail Within Hours: No Evidence Produced in Court

Chamithri Rambukwella, the eldest daughter of former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, was granted bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today, shortly after being taken into custody by the Bribery Commission.

In a dramatic turn of events, Ms. Rambukwella was arrested without prior notice while she was at the court premises for a case involving her father. The Bribery Commission produced her before the court on allegations of aiding and abetting the laundering of funds illicitly acquired by the former Minister.

Key Judicial Observations:

During the proceedings held inside the official chambers of Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama, the court highlighted a significant lapse in the prosecution’s case.

The Magistrate observed that “although the prosecution alleged the suspect had aided and abetted money laundering, no evidence confirming these claims had been presented to the court.”

Release and Next Hearing: Taking these facts into consideration, the Magistrate ordered her release on two personal bails of Rs. 5 million each. The court has scheduled the next hearing for February 10, 2026.
