The inaugural session of the “Damsak Daruwo” educational program was held on July 26, 2026, at the Pali and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Centre, marking a significant milestone under the visionary “Dhamma Bridge” initiative. Organized by the Centre, the world’s first and only center dedicated to Pali and Sanskrit cultural exchange, the program aims to instill Dhamma-based values and linguistic knowledge in the younger generation.
The event commenced with a vibrant and colorful procession carrying a revered Buddha statue imported from Thailand. Escorted from the Bodhidrumarama Temple to the Pali and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Centre with the participation of students from the Sri Sambodhi Dhamma School and local residents, the statue was brought amidst the chanting of “Sadhu.”
Following the arrival, Dr. Damenda Porage offered the initial floral tribute to the Buddha statue. Religious observances were subsequently led by Ven. Balangoda Seelarathana Thero, Director of Religious, Cultural, and Social Relations at the Centre, and Ven. Geta Araluwe Nanananda Thero.
Psychological Guidance and Dhamma Learning
After administering the Five Precepts and chanting the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, an insightful interactive session was held for the students of Sri Sambodhi Dhamma School. Dr. Sharmila Mil Roy, Secretary of the Pali and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Centre, conducted a special psychological counseling session designed to enhance emotional development, mental clarity, and self-confidence among the children prior to their academic activities.
The primary objective of “Damsak Daruwo” is to introduce the Buddha’s foundational teachings in clear, engaging Sinhala alongside basic Pali language concepts. The program seeks to foster moral values, discipline, and a Dhamma-centered perspective on life, while cultivating a deep appreciation for Pali, the ancient Indian canonical language of Theravada Buddhism.
The participating children engaged enthusiastically in practical learning exercises, where Pali stanzas, core doctrinal points, and daily virtues were explained in an accessible and practical manner.
Building Responsible Future Citizens & Preserving Pali Heritage
Highlighting the long-term vision of the initiative, Dr. Damenda Porage, Founder of the Dhamma Bridge Project and Deputy Secretary General of the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), emphasized that the initiative extends beyond language acquisition.
Dr. Porage took the opportunity to express sincere gratitude to the Government of India for officially granting Classical Language status to Pali, commending their genuine and continued efforts to promote and support Pali education and scholarship across the region.
He further noted the deeper purpose of the youth initiative:
“True societal progress is not measured merely by the height of buildings or technological advancement, but by the noble values, rational thinking, and human kindness cultivated in the hearts of the youth who will inherit tomorrow,” stated Dr. Porage. “While we strive to develop children’s intellect and skills in a rapidly changing world, it is equally essential to cultivate virtue. A mind enriched with knowledge must always be guided by a heart grounded in morality.”Dr. Porage added that the noble ambition of “Damsak Daruwo” is to illuminate young minds with the light of the Dhamma, nurturing a disciplined, compassionate, and responsible generation capable of contributing positively to society.
A Monthly Educational Journey
Under the “Dhamma Bridge” umbrella, the Pali and Sanskrit Cultural Exchange Centre plans to conduct these educational sessions on a monthly basis. The organizers extend an open invitation to parents to enroll their children in this ongoing values-based learning journey.
