Rivals Back Jaswar Umar’s Grassroots Campaign Ahead of Sri Lanka’s NOC Election

As Sri Lanka seeks to revitalize its sporting sector, Jaswar Umar, the current President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka, is contesting the presidency of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) as a common candidate in today’s decisive election.

Umar’s campaign centers on a paradigm shift: transforming sports from a mere extracurricular activity into a “fundamental right for every child.” Breaking away from the traditional dominance of elite urban schools, his mandate focuses on decentralizing sports to the grassroots level, ensuring equitable opportunities for undiscovered talent nationwide. He asserts that the journey to an Olympic medal must begin at ‘home,’ where young athletes are nurtured, rather than just at the stadium.

The overarching objective of Umar’s strategy is to prepare Sri Lankan athletes for all 33 internationally recognized Olympic sports. A central pillar of this initiative is the “Sports to the Village” concept, which aims to aggressively develop rural sports infrastructure.

Furthermore, Umar envisions restructuring the NOC from a ceremonial body into an active, operational powerhouse. He has pledged to establish a fully transparent administrative framework with a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and financial mismanagement. A key priority is the implementation of a systematic funding mechanism to alleviate the economic burdens on athletes, allowing them to focus exclusively on their performance.

In a significant pre-election development, a substantial faction from rival camps has reportedly aligned with Umar, drawn by his progressive policy platform. Supporters emphasize that today’s polls represent more than a routine administrative transition; they mark a critical turning point for the future trajectory of Sri Lankan sports.

Promising a transformative era of leadership, Umar expressed confidence that his victory today will initiate the systemic reforms required to place Sri Lanka prominently on the global sports map.
