Tourism Chief Hewawasam Tipped to Lead SriLankan Airlines at Critical Juncture

High-level discussions are reportedly underway regarding the potential appointment of Sri Lanka Tourism Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam as Chairman of SriLankan Airlines, according to unofficial sources.

This comes following the resignation of Sarath Ganegoda, who stepped down as Chairman of SriLankan Airlines and SriLankan Catering, effective 31 March 2026. SriLankan Airlines stated that, in the interim, A.K.D.D. Dimal Arandara will serve as Acting Chairman of both entities until a new appointment is made by the government.

Reports suggest the government holds a positive view of Mr. Hewawasam’s leadership, particularly in light of Sri Lanka Tourism’s strong performance under his stewardship. During a pivotal period, he worked closely with the line ministry to guide the sector to a historic milestone in 2025, recording 2.36 million tourist arrivals, the highest ever achieved by the country.

Despite significant challenges, including the disruptive impact of Cyclone Ditwah at the end of 2025 and a fuel crisis driven by Middle East tensions, Mr. Hewawasam is credited with delivering consistent positive outcomes for the tourism industry during one of its most difficult periods.

He also brings prior aviation experience, having held senior roles at SriLankan Airlines, where he began his career at the International Aviation Academy, the airline’s training arm.

More recently, he has publicly outlined plans to reposition Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) as a tourism-focused gateway. The strategy emphasizes Mattala’s proximity to key tourist zones in the southern and eastern regions, supported by airline engagement initiatives and targeted marketing efforts aimed at stimulating route development.

Political sources indicate that the NPP has strong confidence in Mr. Hewawasam’s professional background and crisis management capabilities, viewing his marketing expertise and public-sector leadership as key strengths in potentially steering SriLankan Airlines at a critical juncture.

Aviation Voice reached out to Mr. Hewawasam for comment; however, he was overseas at the time of publication and unavailable to respond.
