Protecting Innocent Lives Amidst the Shadows of War

: An Urgent Appeal to World Leaders to Choose Humanity Over Power

Editor's Note:
Expressing deep concern over the tragic plight of innocent civilians—particularly women and children—caught in the crossfire of escalating global conflicts, Hon. Rosy Senanayake, former Minister of Women and Child Affairs of Sri Lanka and Miss World 1985, has issued a special public statement. The complete declaration, which urgently calls upon world leaders and the United Nations to choose humanity over confrontation and intervene for immediate peace, is published below.

At a time when escalating tensions and widening divisions threaten the peace, stability, and social harmony of nations and the broader international community, it is imperative that we collectively call for calm, restraint, and responsible leadership.

History has consistently demonstrated that violence and military confrontation do not resolve conflicts; rather, they deepen suffering, devastate societies, and leave lasting scars that future generations are forced to endure. The painful lessons of past conflicts remind us that sustainable peace can only be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy, and mutual respect for human dignity.

I strongly urge all parties involved in present global conflicts to exercise the highest level of restraint and to immediately take meaningful steps toward de-escalation. The protection of civilians must remain an absolute and non-negotiable priority under all circumstances. In particular, the safety, dignity, and well-being of women and children—who often bear the heaviest burdens of war—must be safeguarded at all times.

It is deeply alarming to observe that ongoing hostilities appear to be unfolding in a manner that raises serious concerns regarding potential violations of international humanitarian law and the universally accepted rules governing armed conflict. Any conduct that disregards these legal and moral obligations represents a grave threat to the principles of humanity and justice, and must be unequivocally condemned.

At this critical juncture, the international community cannot remain indifferent. There exists a clear moral and legal responsibility to prevent further human suffering and to promote peaceful resolution. In this regard, I respectfully but firmly call upon the United Nations to take a more active and decisive role by engaging all relevant stakeholders and facilitating urgent diplomatic initiatives aimed at bringing these conflicts to an immediate and lasting end.

The United Nations, as the foremost global institution tasked with safeguarding international peace and security, must intensify its efforts to uphold the principles of international law, protect vulnerable civilian populations, and promote a credible pathway toward peace and stability.

Peace cannot be imposed through force, nor can it emerge from continued cycles of retaliation. It must be built upon dialogue, accountability, respect for human rights, and a genuine commitment to justice.

At this defining moment, leaders across the world must rise above political divisions and demonstrate the courage to place humanity above power, and peace above confrontation. The world today urgently needs responsible leadership that chooses compassion, diplomacy, and cooperation over conflict.

Let us reaffirm our collective commitment to peace, to international law, and to the protection of innocent lives. Humanity must remain at the center of every decision we make.

Rosy Senanayake

Former Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Miss World (1985),

Sri Lanka.
